Most of the
furnishings for this exhibit were acquired from Mike's
Barbershop in Cosmos, Minnesota. The mirrored
counter was shipped from St. Paul in 1887. Until
the invention of the safety razor in 1910, shaving was
done with a straightedge razor, which was sharpened on a
leather strap. The wood burning stove not only
provided heat for the shop but also heated the water
needed for shaving and bathing. The room on the
left in the rear provided a male traveler with a place to
bathe and refresh himself. Ladies, of course, were not
allowed in the shop.
